Field Archaeology Course Info and Application forms.

The cost of the course is £440 for the four weeks.

In order to book a place on our course you will need to fill in the application form, fill in the health a safety questionnaire and pay 50% of the total cost (nonrefundable £220) before June 1st. The application form and questionaire must be emailed to training@culverproject.co.uk.

The course will last 4 weeks, from July 3rd to 28th July. An additional  week from July 29th to August 5th  is available at a discounted rate of £25 per week (camping fees included).

The course is divided in two modules, one theoretical module lasting 8 days and one practical module working on site for the remaining time. The contents of the theoretical module are:

Monday:

  • Introduction: Culver Archaeological Project.
  • Health & Safety on sites and Risk Assessments.
  • Lifting.
  • Tools & equipment; what we use and how we use them.
  • Spoil heaps: how we manage them, (they are a risk in their own right).
  • On site machinery: role of a banksman.
  • Site formations: how we end up with buried archaeology.

Tuesday:

  • Site excavation; the theory and some practice

Wednesday:

  • Finds processing: how we clean and record artefacts.
  • Finds processing: hands-on practice.
  • Site Photography: the formats we use, aerial photography, drones.

Thursday:

  • Site surveys: how to set out site and survey grids using tapes, dumpy levels, GPS.

Friday:

  • Geophysics: Resistivity and Magnetometry.

Monday:

  • Landscape: how to identify archaeology in the landscape.
  • GIS in Archaeology.

Tuesday:

  • Standing Vernacular buildings: Recognition and recording.

Wednesday:

  • Environmental sampling: how & why, the complete process.

Thursday:

  • Site recording: how & why we record, including site drawing and context recording

NB The order of the programme may alter due to availability of tutors on specific days
